sure I suggest that the main motives behind was to build and expand their empires as other colonial powers did.

That's a good start.  I think I might also add what they would GAIN from colonization.  Consider the natural resources of Great Britain and the natural resources of the countries they "colonized."

Take a look at the American colonies.  What was being shipped back to England from America when the states were just "colonies?"  That should give you a clue about what they were after.
