I heard in a documentary yesterday that Admiral Arleigh Burke had Navy Ships standing by if they were needed to invade Cuba during the Bay of Pigs in 1963.

Although Kennedy didn't know about it, Admiral Arleigh Burke who was also an usher at Kennedy's wedding had the ships ready to invade Cuba if the order was issued.

Kennedy never issued the order because he didn't want Cuba to end up being controlled by Meyer Lansky and the Italian Mafia like it had been before Castro.

However I never heard the Navy went behind his back and ordered the ships anyway. Can anyone verify this? I've looked on Google and Bing and haven't been able to find anything.

Sorry, my knowledge in this is fairly limited.

I do remember seeing maps on tv of possible nuclear weapons sites on the island of Cuba.

And showing that a hypothetical strike on Washington DC would reach there from Cuba in 13 minutes!

Local tv stations ran with the idea that Wright Patterson Air Force would also be attacked if it came to a nuclear war.

In 1962 Wright Patterson AFB was a big deal as it was considered an important factor in air defense.

Wright Patterson AFB is located approximately 45 miles North of  our school!

We were shown a brief film in class describing the position we were to assume during our regular drills. We basically slid down to the floor, knelt on our knees, and tucked our heads with our hands placed over top!

That only lasted for less than a week as someone must have pointed out the folly of hiding under one’s desk for protection from a nuclear bomb We were then quickly ushered into our cinder block reinforced bathrooms to assume the same position.

Many children cried and got upset. I on the other hand had watched a lot of war tv shows and didn’t hear the whistling approach of any bombs and dismissed the seriousness of the whole situation. Later, I wondered if nuclear bombs even whistled?

I was only 9 at the time and very naive about such matters.

Luckily the leaders must have realized there would be absolutely no winners in a nuclear war….
