The landlords mortgage has gone up

And they expect me to pay more rent.

They also intend on doing renovation on the house and that will also push the rent up.

Meanwhile I'm still on benefits.

Any thoughts?

Because there's people willing to pay the increases on things the prices will always go up. It's the way of the world, or so it seems.

Is your rent paid directly from your government program? Direct payment is how it works in the United States. Those who are faced with a raise in rent causing additional financial hardship the government may request to switch them from a flat rent to an income based rent. That could be something you could seek. The idea with benefits is to keep you comfortable, not too comfortable, but certainly not homeless.

Check with whatever housing authority is available to you.  As Sandy mentioned, many rents (and increases) are controlled and/or limited by government rule.
