Spendthrift Farm, the owner and breeder of grade 1 winner Tamara , went to the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) Nov. 6 to report that the daughter of Bolt d`Oro exited the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) with a hind leg injury.

Tamara, trained by Richard Mandella, sustained a small fracture in her splint bone in her left hind "that will not require surgery," according to Spendthrift. The farm wrote that the 2-year-old filly "will get some much-deserved rest as she recovers."

The regally-bred Tamara, a daughter of the Hall of Fame race mare Beholder , had finished seventh as the 4-5 favorite in the Nov. 3 Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park. Entering the Breeders' Cup on a two-race win streak, the filly led the race through splits of :22.47, :46.60, and 1:10.95 before fading at the top of the stretch. She was beaten 8 1/4 lengths behind the winner Just F Y I . The race was her first time stretching out beyond seven furlongs.

I believe that Tamara's injury was the reason, and the cause of her retreat, Blue Jay. With the Possibility that she tired due to both the injury and the new distance she encountered, as well. However, from what I witnessed it was the injury that caused her to fade. Otherwise she was the clear favorite at 4-5, the one to beat.

Mike Smith did the right thing by following Tamara's instinct as not to make her injury more severe. Rest is what she needs now. My best goes out to Tamara, and all her connections. Here's to Tamara getting well and making a huge comeback.

Thank you for posting, Blue Jay. : )

Correct! what happened makes more sense now that we know she was injured.
