How do you explain something to someone who does not know nor understand what you are talking about?

Is there any way that you can give a very clear explanation to something to someone who is having difficulty knowing and understanding what you are talking about?

There is usually a point of reference -  a book, a website, whatever it may be.   I would direct them to either of those.

It takes much skill to get across information who is not accepting your word or processing them the way you meant them!
